Daily life on our rural Pennsylvania farm
Its called sustainable farming, or regenerative agriculture. In many ways its a throw back to traditional farming methods. Focus is on building soil through rotational grazing with a mix of species. Composting organic waste products to fertilize garden beds. Not tilling established beds so as to not disturb healthy microbial growth. Never adding petroleum based chemicals to the land. Maintaining healthy aquifers, springs and streams and harvesting rain water. These methods were utilized by successful farming cultures for generations.
We recognize that industrialized large scale agriculture is currently necessary to support large populations but that the overuse of petroleum based chemicals, genetic modification, long supply chains and centralization is not sustainable in the long term.
We believe that sustainable / regenerative methods with decentralized supply chains (aka farm to table) and diverse mixes of livestock and vegetable production are beneficial to our local ecosystems and healthier for our communities and environment.
Psalm 50:10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.
We believe in being good stewards of the land and all nature therein. We stress ethical keeping of livestock and humane treatment of all animals. We do not keep animals from pasture or confined in a feedlot type situation. We never feed them anything contrary to their natural diet. That includes using genetically modified supplemental feeds. We never use hormones or any pharmaceutical that is not absolutely necessary for the animals comfort and well being. When culling an animal, any stresses are minimized and method quick and humane.
This all started about a dozen years ago when a health scare in our new family led us down a path of nutrition and clean diet. Starting small, researching voraciously, asking innumerable questions and getting to know the farm markets. A few vegetable planters became larger and larger gardens. By 2016 we went all in, purchased a small farm and embarked upon an amazing journey. Gardens became permanent beds, a few laying hens became flocks. Then goats, then cattle, then meat chickens. Providing clean, healthy food to our family and community is not a job, its a calling. We did not do this alone! We are so thankful to countless people who have helped us along the way and continue to support small farms and local agriculture.
